Which Medifast Foods Contain Whey? Which Don’t?

I was recently asked if medifast products contain whey and if so, which ones.  The person asking also wanted to know if the whey content prohibited medifast foods from someone who has issues with gluten and Celiac disease.  I will address these concerns in the following article.

Many Medifast Foods And Meals Do Contain Whey, But Some Don’t:  Listing all of the medifast foods here would take forever. It’s probably easier for me to tell you which foods DON’T contain whey, but you can see a  list of medifast foods here.  The foods that are whey free are:

the medifast oatmeal;

the ready to drink shakes (not the 55 or 70);

the chocolate pudding;

and 2 of the soups (chicken noodle and crab.)

What Type Of Whey Does Medifast Use And Why?:  Medifast uses whey protein isolate.  This is pure, high quality whey which is extremely high in protein.  This type of protein is often more expensive than other types, but many consider it’s additional cost to be worth it because of it’s purity.  I believe that the company uses whey because it’s a very effective way to get high levels of protein into their foods without adding the fat and calories. It’s also considered a healthy food ingredient and is easy to digest by many. 

Can People With Celiac Disease Consume Whey? Why Is It A Concern For Some?:  Whey is a dairy product.  It doesn’t contain gluten.  And the pure whey used in medifast foods usually does not cause a problem for those with celiac disease or for those who have issues with gluten.

However, some people do have allergies or digestive issues with whey.  If this is an issue for you, then you always have the option of the ready to drink shakes, the oatmeals, some of the puddings and some of the soups. 

But many people who ask me about whey do so because of concerns about gluten.  Many of medifast’s foods are Gluten Free.  In fact, the company has a special package made for folks with these concerns.
