Millet is commonly used as a wheat substitute for both gluten free and wheat free diets, as well as quinoa, brown rice, and sprouted grains.

 

A wheat-free diet is often confused with a gluten-free diet. Although wheat products contain gluten, these two types of diets are not the same thing. When you’re on a wheat-free diet, you simply eliminate all foods that contain wheat. When you follow a gluten-free diet, you not only give up wheat, you also eliminate barley and rye.

Digestive Problems and Wheat

 

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) can cause abdominal pain, bloating, gas, changes in bowel movements and cramping. People with IBS may be constipated one minute and have diarrhea the next. The urge to have a bowel movement can get so intense sometimes that it’s hard to control. Can you imagine being stuck in traffic feeling like this?

 

The symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome vary from person to person, and they can come and go. Gluten Intolerance has been shown to produce or pronounce IBS symptoms. Since gluten is found in wheat, eliminating it from your diet can help reduce the symptoms.

 

You don’t have to have irritable bowel syndrome for wheat to cause digestive problems. When you eat wheat, it can clog up the intestines and make digestion difficult. A wheat-free diet can promote a healthy digestive tract by allowing food to flow through easier.

Go Wheatless and Drop a Few Pounds

 

Wheat is found in bread, pasta, baked goods, cereal, ice cream, gravies and other processed foods. These types of foods have no nutritional value and they make it hard for you to lose weight. On top of the empty calories you get when you load up on processed wheat products, you ingest all kinds of unhealthy chemical additives.

 

When you boot wheat out of your diet, there’s nothing left to eat but lean meats, fish, poultry, fruits, beans, nuts, legumes and vegetables. These foods are nutrient-dense and lower in calories than processed foods. When you opt for healthier foods, you automatically reduce your caloric intake, so you have an easier time slimming down.

Lose the Wheat to Reduce Joint Pain

 

Gluten can hinder your body’s natural defenses against joint pain caused by osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. If you have either of these conditions, a wheat-free diet may help reduce discomfort. Also, when you suffer from joint conditions, being overweight will amplify the pain. The weight loss you experience from a wheat-free diet will take some of the pressure off of your joints and help ease pain.

 

When you’ve been eating wheat all of your life, the thought of eliminating it from your diet can be scary. If going wheat-free is difficult for you, take small steps. Start off by cutting your intake by half. After you do this for a while, continue to reduce the amount of wheat you eat. Before you know it, you’ll be wheat-free and on the path to better health.

In cases of great irritability of the stomach, the most easily borne oyster-soup is prepared by the addition of the liquor to boiling milk. Vegetable.—The most important members of this class of foods are the cereal grains—wheat, rye, corn, rice, buckwheat, oats, and barley. The universality of its consumption and its nutritive value place wheat-bread in the first position as an article of diet. The composition of wheat-flour is as follows : Water 14-0 Fatty matters 1-2 Gluten 12-8 Albumen 1 ’8 Dextrin, sugar 7’2 Starch 697 Cellulose.. 1’7 Salts (potash, soda, lime, magnesia, phosphoric acid, etc.) 1’6 In the preparation of wheat-flour, the bran is separated. Important constituents of the wheat are thus removed, as the following analysis of the bran shows : Water ID’S Fatty matters 2 82 Gluten 10-84 Albumen 1’64 Dextrin, sugar ‘. fi’8 Starch 22-62 Cellulose 43-98 Salts 2-52 The internal envelope of the wheat-grain contains also a ferment, know as cerealin, which has very active properties. As the proportion of bran to flour is as sixteen to eighty, it is obvious that considerable loss accrues in the preparation of superfine flour. Wheat-bread made from superfine flour is easy of digestion, owing to its lightness and sponginess permitting a rapid diffusion of the gastric juices through every part of it. Most of it is also available for nutrition ; there is little residuum ; hence the constipation which attends its use in large proportion relatively to the other constituents of the diet. As it forms the main part of the cell wall of all higher plants, and as a rule of the lower plants, which include fungi and bacteria, it is a factor to be considered in all study of vegetable foods. It is insoluble in water though softened by long application of boiling temperature. The digestive juices of man have little or no action on cellulose. In presence of water and under the influence rf bacteria it decomposes, giving rise to marsh gas. This bacterial decomposition may take place in the intestine. It is said to increase the peristaltic action of the intestine and by hastening the elimination of food cause a loss of nitrogen. This was shown by experimental feeding with whole-wheat bread. Men have frequently two hundred acres or more, when they could cultivate properly not more than fifty, the remainder lying partially waste. These two hundred acres, therefore, should have three more farmers, giving to each fifty acres. While men are traveling from the Eastern States into the West, even going to California, to cultivate the land, about one-third of the State of New Jersey, and probably one-third of the State of Pennsylvania, and very large fields of territory in the State of New York, are yet untouched, utterly uncultivated and wild; and that expense which would be requisite to move a family to Kansas would buy land enough in the State of New Jersey to support a family. Men should learn to till the soil well, and make every acreof land largely productive. Nor should men be satisfied simply to raise cereals for the market; and though bread is the staff of life, every family needs fruit in liberal measure for the health of its members.
